What Airmass Meters do...

Airflow Meters what they do?

An Airflow Meter is basically an engine load management device. The leading manufacturer of Airflow Meters is BOSCH and they have two options of Airflow Meters the first being non motronic and the second being motronic. Airflow Meters have been around now for many years, and they are a metal unit, with a flap inside them. The location of the Airflow Meter is upstream of the engines air intake. The flap within the Airflow Meter, sensors the air intake before the air enters the engine cylinders. This feature caters for rapid changes in engine load and assists in avoiding flat spots and poor driveability associated with rapid movements of the throttle.

Airmass Meters what they do?

The Airflow Meter has now been replaced by what we call an Airmass Meter, the Airmass Meter has developed several different names including a MAF sensor, and a Hot wire sensor. The units are made of plastic as the picture above shows, and are located on the air intake pipe, normally just before the air filter box, but sometimes even locate into the air box. The Airmass Meter is an improvement, on the original Airflow Meters, due to the fact that the Airmass Meters don’t have the internal flaps, hence the Airmass Meter removes the restriction of the flap from the induction system. The other advantage of the Airmass Meter over the older style Airflow Meter is that, the Airmass Meter has no moving parts, and the design eliminates the inherent problem of the Airflow Meters have of calculating air density.
